What counts as cross-country flight time under FAA rules?
Last updated: July 9, 2026
Regions: FAA
FAR 61.1(b)(3) defines cross-country differently by purpose. For most certificates and ratings (PPL, IR, ATP) it is flight that includes a landing at a point more than 50 nm from the original departure point and the use of navigation aids. For Sport Pilot it is any landing at a point other than the departure point.
